Perio Preventative Hygiene

Oral Hygiene is the practice of keeping one’s mouth clean and free of disease and other problems, e.g. bad breath, by regular brushing of the teeth and cleaning between the teeth. It is important that good Oral Hygiene be carried out on a regular basis to enable prevention of dental disease and bad breath. The most common types of dental disease are cavities (dental caries) and gum diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis.

In general, your dentist will complete your profession scale and polish, however if you suffer from periodontitis, or need some guidance on how to improve your oral hygiene regime the dentist will refer you to a dental hygienist.

Dental Hygienists are increasingly valued members of the oral healthcare team who work under the prescription of a dentist. The Dental Hygienist works with preventive and therapeutic procedures aimed to prevent and/or control dental caries and periodontal diseases. The Dental Hygienist provides oral healthcare advice and procedures such as scaling, polishing, placement of fissure sealants, taking of radiographs and administering of local anaesthetic.
